Reflections on Connections

What started out as a show about the DevConnections Developer Conference morphed into a round-table chat with Dan Appleman, Kathleen Dollard, Mark Dunn, Don Kiely, Robert Scoble, Chris Sells, and Bill Vaughn about developer conferences like DevConnections, writing books, speaking, and various other aspects of the industry. Of course, it was lots of fun too.

Dan Appleman

Dan Appleman is a well known author, software developer and speaker. He is the founder and CEO of Desaware Inc., a developer of add-on products and components for Microsoft Visual Studio. He is a Microsoft Visual Basic MVP, webmaster of SearchDotNet.com, one of the cofounders of APress publishing, and is the author of numerous books and ebooks including "How Computer Programming Works" and "Always use Protection: A teen's Guide to Safe Computing.

Kathleen Dollard

Kathleen Dollard loves to code and loves to teach and talk about code. She’s written tons of articles, a book, and spoken around the world. She’s on the .NET Team at Microsoft where she works on the .NET managed languages (C#, F#, and Visual Basic.NET). She’s always ready to help developers take the next step in exploring the wonderful world we call code.

Mark Dunn

Mark has over 20 years of experience in the disciplines of software engineering, database administration, and project management. Software that Mark developed for the radio industry is still in use today. He was a lead developer on the team that created Tapscan, a well-known Arbritron ratings analysis package that has dominated that industry for many years.
Microsoft recently honored Mark by awarding him MVP status for his contributions to the Visual Studio .NET community. Mark also co-founded .NET Rocks!, an Internet radio program for .NET developers recognized in over 80 countries and now hosted by Microsoft on the MSDN site.
Mark is a Microsoft Certified Trainer, Application Developer, Solution Developer for .NET, and Database Administrator.

Don Kiely

Don Kiely, MVP, MCSD, MSDE, is a senior technology consultant specializing in developing desktop and Web applications that integrate databases, Microsoft Office, and related technologies, using tools including SQL Server, Visual Basic, ASP.NET and XML. Don has authored and co-authored several programming books, including Visual Basic Visual Basic 6 Client/Server How-To and Visual Basic Programmer's Guide to the Windows Registry. He writes regularly for many industry journals, including InformationWeek, IEEE Computer magazine, Visual Studio .NET (VBPJ), and many other magazines. Don trains developers and speaks regularly at industry conferences, including TechEd, VSLive!, DevConnections, and others. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from the University of Colorado, but fortunately learned the error of his establishment ways. In his spare time he roams the Alaska wilderness by foot, dog sled, skis, and kayak, with his dogs Mardy and Izzi. Robert Scoble

Robert Scoble is a geek who grew up in the Silicon Valley (his dad was an engineer at Lockheed) and since 1985 he has been building online communities. In 2000 Robert started his technology blog scobleizer.com and his life has been on a rocketship ever since. In 2003-2006 Robert worked at Microsoft as an evangelist and one of the five guys who started Microsoft's famous Channel9 video community. Today Robert works at Rackspace as the Startup Liaison Officer, traveling the world to study and make media about world-changing startups. You can find Robert's videos on youtube.com/scobleizer.

Chris Sells

Chris Sells is a Google Product Manager on the Flutter development experience. He enjoys long walks on the beach and various technologies.

Bill Vaughn

William (Bill) Vaughn is an industry-recognized author, mentor, and subject-matter expert. He's been in the computer industry for over thirty years - He's worked with mainframe, minicomputer, and personal computer systems as a developer, manager, trainer, marketer, support person, and writer.

After 14 years at Microsoft, Bill stepped away to work on his new books and training seminars. His area of specialization is focused on data access and especially Visual Basic and SQL Server. He's written six editions of the Hitchhiker's Guide to Visual Basic and SQL Server (published by Microsoft Press) and two editions of ADO.NET and ADO Examples and Best Practices for Visual Basic Programmers. There's even a C# version, ADO.NET Examples and Best Practices for C# Programmers.

Bill is a top-rated speaker and frequents conferences all over the world including VSLive, DevConnections, and PASS (Professional Association for SQL Server). He's also written a wealth of articles for magazines such as SQL Server Magazine, Visual Basic Programmer's Journal, .NET Magazine, and many others. Bill is currently working on new content focusing on the .NET Compact Framework and SQL Server CE as well as the next version of SQL Server. He's available for consulting or custom training.
