Machine Learning Panel at NDC London

Episode #1413 Tuesday, February 14, 2017

Are your machines learning? While at NDC in London, Carl and Richard hosted a panel of Jennifer Marsman, Evelina Gabasova and Barbara Fusinska talking about their work in machine learning. The conversation ranges over the variety of projects they've worked on, including using machine learning to analyze Stack Overflow data, building a machine learning-driven lie detector, doing sales data analysis with R, and more. The machine learning space is vast, and there are plenty of opportunities for everyone, you need to get exploring!

Guests:

Jennifer Marsman

Jennifer Marsman is the Principal Software Engineer of Microsoft’s “AI for Earth” group, where she uses data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to aid with clean water, agriculture, biodiversity, and climate change. Jennifer is a frequent speaker at software development conferences around the world. Since 2016, Jennifer was recognized as one of the “top 100 most influential individuals in artificial intelligence and machine learning” by Onalytica, reaching the #2 slot in 2018. She has been featured in Bloomberg for her work using EEG and machine learning to perform lie detection. In 2009, Jennifer was chosen as "Techie whose innovation will have the biggest impact" by X-OLOGY for her work with GiveCamps, a weekend-long event where developers code for charity. She has also received many honors from Microsoft, including the “Best in Role” award for Technical Evangelism, Central Region Top Contributor Award, Heartland District Top Contributor Award, DPE Community Evangelist Award, CPE Champion Award, MSUS Diversity & Inclusion Award, Gold Club, and Platinum Club. Prior to becoming a Developer Evangelist, Jennifer was a software developer in Microsoft’s Natural Interactive Services division. In this role, she earned two patents for her work in search and data mining algorithms. Jennifer has also held positions with Ford Motor Company, National Instruments, and Soar Technology. Jennifer holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering and Master’s Degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her graduate work specialized in artificial intelligence and computational theory. Jennifer blogs at http://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/jennifer and tweets at http://twitter.com/jennifermarsman.

Evelina Gabasova

Evelina Gabasova is a machine learning researcher working in bioinformatics and statistical genomics. She is developing mathematical models which integrate different types of genomic data to distinguish cancer subtypes. She studied computational statistics and machine learning at University College London and currently she is finishing her PhD at Cambridge University in the MRC Biostatistics Unit. Evelina has used many different languages to implement machine learning algorithms, such as Matlab, R or Python. In the end, F# is her favourite and she uses it frequently for data manipulation and exploratory analysis. She writes a blog on F# in data science at evelinag.com. You can also find her on Twitter as @evelgab.

Barbara Fusinska

Barbara Fusinska is a software developer and mentor to aspiring developers. Working with a range of different companies, Barbara gained experience with team dynamics. This has lead to her strong belief in shaping a proper working environment. She trusts this allows high-functional teams to reach their full qualities. Alongside building passionate teams, Barbara enjoys collaborating around architectures. Currently speaking at conferences in-between working in London.
